Doris' Story

Doris and Harrel Hargrove founded Doris’ Flowers & Gifts as Doris’ Florist with the help of their four daughters: Terry, Brenda, Vonda, and Honey. The shop’s Grand Opening took place on July 5th of 1969; days before we landed on the moon, and about a month before the Woodstock Music and Art Fair took place!
With Doris’ passion for floristry, and Harrell’s iron working expertise, the two first built their business from the ground up in the Maury County Shopping Center, Suite 12 (now Neely’s Mill). Harrell constructed our original cooler in our old location, which we left in 2008, as well as all of our tables and stools which can still be seen in our studio today!
Following Harrell’s untimely and unexpected death in 1974, Doris found herself a widowed mother left to raise four children alone. With the support of Maury County, and her knack for leadership, Doris became the picture of resilience and success as a woman in business.
Doris’ involvement made her a prominent face in the floral industry. She is a member of the Tennessee State Florist’s Association, Central Tennessee Professional Florist’s Association, Society of American Florists, and TCF. She served as a director of TSFA, and as president of CTPFA, along with other roles in the organization. Doris also served as the president of the Tennessee Teleflora Unit. Throughout her time in these organizations, Doris accomplished many awards and distinctions. Doris has received TSFA Florist of the Year 1986, CTPFA The Iris Award for Excellence 1989, TSFA Hall of Fame Inductee Number 21, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, & The Living Legend Award: The Rose & Inaugural Induction into the Crystal Rose Society in 2010. She is a Teleflora Personalized Wedding Consultant: Phase I and Phase II. Doris became a TSFA Lifetime Member as of 2018. She is also a charter original Member of Friends of Joe Smith.
Doris received opportunities of a lifetime during her time in the industry. She often traveled to far away places, experiencing historical events and becoming acquainted with famous faces one can only dream of meeting. (Yes, Dolly is as nice as she seems!)
In 2001, Doris traveled with other members of SAF to the Presidential Inauguration, designing centerpieces and arrangements for the festivities. In 2010, Doris ventured to the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade. There she designed with Fiesta Parade Floats in California. In 2017, she and Brenda were inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) in Seattle, WA. Through countless hours of study and testing, they accomplished the most prestigious distinction of floral designers in the industry.
Despite all of her achievements, Doris always remained humble; telling her colleagues and clients “You never stop learning. You never know all there is to know.” Taking this motto into consideration, she never ceased her education throughout her 50 year career, jumping at the chance to attend new design programs and classes, as well as well known schools of floral design. With Doris now in retirement, her daughters and granddaughter have been left to carry on her legacy of floral excellence.

Meet the Staff

Brenda Blackburn AIFD
Brenda is the General Manager and Lead Designer of Doris’ Flowers & Gifts. She is the daughter of Doris and the mother of Emmarynthe. Brenda’s passion for floral design began at a young age when her parents founded the shop. Originally a delivery driver & shopkeeper, Brenda quickly followed in Doris’ footsteps, venturing into the art of floral design. The rest is history. She has continued her education and involvement throughout her 50 year career.
Brenda is one of the oldest members of the Tennessee State Florists Association, where she served as Director, Vice President, and President. She served as Liaison for TSFA and CTPFA. She attended the Cliff Mann School of Floral Design in Denver, CO in 1981, as well as the Phil Rulloda School of Floral Design in 1985. Brenda is a Teleflora Personalized Wedding Consultant: Phase I and Phase II. In 2017, she achieved induction into the American Institute of Floral Design, making her one of the top floral designers in the country. She has received countless awards in her career.
When Brenda isn’t designing, she can usually be found answering the telephones and assisting customers out front. Brenda goes above and beyond for her clients, striving to meet their needs and fulfill their requests. Recognizing how important favorite colors and flowers are to you and your loved ones, she can often be heard on the phone with our brokers at early hours attempting to get specific blooms in store. Brenda takes pride in her craft, making sure every design that goes out the door lives up to the Doris’ Flowers & Gifts standard of design, quality, and excellence. Her motto is “It has our name on it, it should look like it came from Doris’”
Emmarynthe Blackburn, AS, TSFA
Emmarynthe is the Delivery Foreman and Director of Marketing at Doris’ Flowers & Gifts. She is the daughter of Brenda and the only (favorite!) granddaughter of Doris. Emmarynthe attended Columbia State Community College where she earned her Associate of Science Degree in Agriculture Plant and Soil Science. However, she quickly realized she was happiest behind the wheel of a flower van. She is a member of the Tennessee State Florist's Association and the 2021 recipient of the Horizon Award.
Emmarynthe is a Jane of all Trades, managing our website/ social media design, the vision for all our advertisements, and much of the maintenance of our shop. She runs a tight ship with her delivery bay, making sure things get to places on time and in pristine condition. Emmarynthe is a stickler for perfection and quality control. If one bloom is out of place, it doesn’t leave the truck! She treats Doris van like her own truck, and she can often be heard saying to Brenda and Honey “Don’t scratch my van!”
Growing up in the industry has made Emmarynthe a true flower child. With over 23 years of floral experience, Emmarynthe takes after her grandmother with her passion for business and networking with the community. When she’s not cruising down Carmack in Iris, she can often be found visiting with the public, telling stories, and handing out business cards to old and new friends. While she doesn’t design, her artistic talents lie in the disciplines of painting, which can be seen in her murals throughout the store, and her dancing, which can also be seen in the store! When you see her around town, be sure to say hello!
Honey Hargrove CNS, LPI, TSFA
Honey is the youngest daughter of Doris and the Office Manager of Doris’ Flowers & Gifts. Honey manages our bookkeeping and keeps all of our computers and software up and running. Her passion for tech led her to become a Computer Networking Specialist. She later became a Licensed Private Investigator. Honey is a member of the Tennesee State Florist's Association. She serves as auditor.
Despite her other endeavors, Honey has remained involved in the company. Thanks to Honey’s efforts, Doris’ was way ahead of its time technologically. We were the first flower shop in Maury County to have a computer Wire Service for sending and receiving with other florists globally. She was also responsible for the implementation and wiring of our original Daisy POS System in 1996. Honey can often be found taking telephone orders and working in the back of the shop. She enjoys family, roller-skating with friends, and her Great Pyrenees Lab, Icee Snow.
Iris Flowers, Licensed Flower Van
Iris is the flower van of Doris’ Flowers & Gifts. She has been with the company since 2023. When Doris’ 16 year old van failed in 2022, we were without a delivery van for over a year due to the vehicle shortage. After a year’s long difficult search for a vehicle, our friends at CDJR helped us acquire Iris. She can usually be seen with Emmarynthe, enjoying long drives and visits to new places. She loves wearing our colors and is especially fond of lavender. Be sure to wave to Iris on the streets of Columbia!
